An embassy is established to maintain foreign relations and provide assistance to traveling citizens. By contrast, a consulate is a smaller version of an embassy and is generally located in the larger tourist cities of a country but not the capital.
Due to the high level of interaction between countries in our interconnected world of today, diplomatic offices are needed in each country to aid in and allow such interactions to occur. The result of these diplomatic relationships are the embassies and consulates found in cities worldwide. They are there to help its fellow citizens, in any case, by any means at times.
As you are travelling overseas to visit family, as a tourist, for business or to live, there are services by some governments that you can log your travel, check your government web site info before you leave , we have smart traveler here in Australia, you can register your plans with them before you leave Australia. The registration information you provide will help them to contact or find you in an emergency – whether it is a natural disaster, civil disturbance or family emergency. It may also be used to pass other information to you such as important travel advice updates, notice of elections and information on other matters relevant to travellers and expatriates.
Embassy vs. Consulate
Embassy.
While the terms embassy and consulate are used together, however, the two are very different. An embassy is the larger and more important of the two and is described as a permanent diplomatic mission which is generally located in a country’s capital city.
An Embassy is the diplomatic representation of a country’s government in another country.
It transmits messages of its home government to the government of the host country and vice versa. It informs its home government about important political, social, economical, military and other events happening in the host country.
It prepares international treaties and official state visits.
It promotes its own home culture, economy and science in the host country.
The military attaché is responsible for contacts between the two armed forces and for arms business. Many embassies (but not all of them) have a consular section exercising the functions of a consulate.
Consulate.
A Consulate is the representation of the public administration of a country in a foreign town, is responsible for its own fellow- citizens, living or travelling in the host country. The most important duties of a consulate are, to handle minor diplomatic issues like issuing visas, aiding in trade relationships, and taking care of migrants, tourists, and expatriates.
to establish and renew passports and other official documents, to report Births, Deaths, Marriages, Divorces, Adoptions etc. happened in the host country to the competent authorities home., to inform its own citizens living abroad about the social security situation, To handle the military formalities and control for its own citizens liable to military service. To help its own citizens in distress or other emergency situations.
To look after its own citizens in detention or arrest and to watch over the rule of law and fair trials. To establish entry visas to foreign citizens and to inform them about immigration-, residence- and work permits.
I have sourced some information on various embassy’s and consulates while you travel to the Philippines, these are always available through my site, look under the Embassy Info Tab, there is Embassy and Consulate tabs, and all the info you need is here.
I have on a couple of occasions gone to the Australian embassy for information, useful and prompt. I had to make an appointment as they were always busy, another thing to ask your embassy if you need to visit them, it pays to be prepared, and not having to be turned around as you didn’t make an appointment.
Always please check with your Government Embassy’s, and if you need to visit them, ring in advance or even check there website I have supplied, by clicking it will take you straight to your embassy or consultant, I have supplied details on how to contact your embassy, address, location, and phone numbers, upon writing this all is correct, but I will keep and eye out just in case any updates are available on Embassy and Consulates, let me know if u can’t get through or some information is out dated..
Check also office hours, as they vary a lot, times and some are opened only half a day Fridays, and some are closed for the weekend, and public holidays also..
